The subtle revolution happening in how women live, work and rest.
If you've ever wondered why your home feels harder to be in than it used to, why switching off feels almost impossible, or why you still feel unsupported despite ticking all the boxes and doing everything right, this blog is for you.
Whether you're a woman running a business from home, navigating the juggle between work and family life, or simply craving a more intentional way to live, this blog will guide you through why your home’s energetic environment has far more influence over your energy, focus, nervous system and overall wellbeing than you probably thought.
We'll explore why the demands we're placing on our homes have changed beyond recognition, what environmental psychology and feng shui tell us about the spaces we live and work in, and the practical shifts that can help you begin creating a home that genuinely supports the life you're building, rather than one that's hindering it.
Why are modern homes struggling to keep up with the way we live now?
Remember that little thing back in 2020, you know, the global pandemic? It's been the catalyst for so much change, not least the way we work and how we're choosing to live. More and more people are now looking for more flexibility in how they work, often working remotely and from home. We're also seeing an increase in women, particularly those in their middle years, leaving corporate careers to set up businesses, again often from home.
Add to that the pace of life (thank you cycle 9), the unspoken mental load and the rising cost of living... and it’s easy to see that the demands we're now placing on our homes greatly exceed what we expected of them ten years ago.
The rise of “Intentional Living”, and why it starts at home.
People are becoming more intentional. More conscious of their mental and physical health, the time they have and the quality of how they're spending it. They’re also more aware of the invisible mental load, and the often-unacknowledged pressure that women, in particular, carry on top of everything else.
I see it a lot in the women I work with. High-achieving women looking to redefine what the “work/life balance” looks like, in exchange for a more sustainable way to live, work and enjoy success. Where being successful feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside, rather than the kind that costs your health, your relationships and your joy.
They're craving a more considered, intentional life that fully supports them to thrive, not just in their work or their businesses, but in all areas of their life, and the foundation for that starts with their base.
Their home.
How does your home environment affect your health, focus and wellbeing?
Our homes are simply no longer just the places we return to at the end of the day.
In addition to being the place we sleep, eat, socialise and raise our families, they're now expected to support our wellbeing, our mental and physical health, our productivity, our relationships and the overall quality of how we experience life. They've become spaces where we regulate stress, process emotions, make important decisions, reset from overstimulation and, at some point, attempt to find a moment of calm amongst our increasingly demanding and digitally connected lives.
For many people, they've also become offices, creative studios/playrooms, meeting spaces, classrooms, gyms, content creation spaces and business headquarters. Particularly for women building businesses from home, the boundaries between work, life, leadership, motherhood and rest have become increasingly blurred.
The modern home is simultaneously carrying the weight of multiple roles, yet most homes were never intentionally designed to support this level of emotional, energetic and functional demand.
Environmental psychology confirms that the spaces we spend time in directly influence how we behave, think, feel, focus and rest whether we're conscious of it or not. Your nervous system is constantly responding to the cues within your environment, be that the visual noise, the layout, the flow, the lighting, the organisation, or even the energetic quality of a space.
And over time, that has a compounding effect on your energy, focus, capacity and ability to genuinely switch off, rest and feel supported by the life you've worked so hard to create.
What's the difference between a beautiful home and a supportive one?
A beautiful home and a supportive home aren't the same thing. You can have a beautiful home and it can still be unsupportive for the people living in it, because it's not just about getting the aesthetics right. That's only part of the story.
What most people don’t realise, is that the aesthetics and the energetics are two halves of one whole, which means most homes are only functioning on half of their supportive potential.
The energetic blueprint of a space has enormous influence on the quality of lifestyle the people living and working within it will experience. The western world is now starting to wake up to the fact that a beautiful home, and a home that truly supports you, aren't the same thing. It's the second one that creates the bigger shifts.
What changes when your home environment actually supports you?
When your home is genuinely working for you, your ability to focus, perform and think clearly improves. You're less reactive, calmer, more regulated. Your mood improves, decision-making feels easier. The mental load feels lighter. There's capacity for high-level creative work, complex ideas and strategic thinking without the brain fog. You plan better, problem-solve more efficiently, switch off more easily, giving your nervous system a well-earned break.
And it’s that rest and recovery that feeds everything else and enables you to thrive. Better health, wealth and harmony in your relationships and with your loved ones.
Any sleep-deprived mum will tell you the power of a good night's sleep.
Building from overflow, not empty.
The women I work with are intentionally turning to their homes to build the foundations for a completely different way to experience life. One where they're consciously creating a life of their choosing, and building from a place of fullness and overflow.
They're creating homes that hold space for them, rather than them holding everything for everyone but them. Spaces intentionally designed for calm, connection, creativity, joy, genuine nervous system regulation and rest. As well as all the bigger things too.
They know the old way of "living to work" simply isn't how they want to live, grow and succeed anymore.
They're done with that old paradigm.
How do I know if my home is affecting my energy and wellbeing?
Before changing anything, first start by paying attention to how your home makes you feel right now.
Which spaces help you feel calm, focused and clear-minded?
Which rooms leave you feeling mentally overstimulated or drained?
Are there areas in your home that constantly accumulate clutter or unfinished jobs?
Do you have spaces that genuinely support rest and recovery, or are they still mentally “busy”?
Is your home helping your life feel easier to hold, or harder to handle?
Initially, it’s just a case of bringing awareness to your home and looking at it through a different lens that enables you to see how supportive and aligned your space really is for the way you want to live. That then gives you valuable feedback for your next step.
How can I improve my home environment for better energy and focus?
You don't have to jump into a full renovation to experience the benefits of this and feel the difference. You can start right where you are.
1. Reduce visual overwhelm
Your brain and nervous system are constantly processing your environment. Overcrowded surfaces, visual clutter and too many unfinished visual cues increases low-level cognitive load and mental fatigue. Just simplifying what your eyes are processing on repeat, can have a surprisingly calming effect and instantly boost your mood.
2. Prioritise recovery spaces
Many homes are designed to prioritise function and productivity, without a huge amount of consideration for rest and recovery. Creating just one area dedicated to calm, softness and nervous system regulation can change the way your entire home feels, and the way the people within it function.
It could be something as simple as a reading nook, a “quiet corner” (amazing for kids) or a wellness chair. Then surround it with a selection of your favourite carefully curated wellness rituals, be that a journal, a book, crystals, your favourite candle – even your red light mask! This is you time, even if it’s just for a few moments to practice breathing.
3. Look at how your home supports your daily flow
Notice whether your environment supports the way you naturally move through your day. Is there enough light where you work? Does your bedroom actually feel restful? Are your storage systems working efficiently and making life easier, or creating more friction? Seemingly small frustrations compound quickly, ultimately costing you time and your peace of mind.
4. Improve the quality of energy entering the home
In Feng Shui, energy enters your life through the front entrance of your home. The quality of the welcome it receives plays a significant part in how positive or negative a home feels. For example, a neglected, cluttered or uninspiring entrance can subtly drag your entire home down. Whereas, clean pathways, good lighting, welcoming plants and a well-cared-for entrance instantly elevates the tone of a space, and lifts the mood of everyone who enters it.
5. Pay attention to the spaces you avoid
This is a big one. The spaces we avoid are often the ones that need the attention most (in your life as well as your home). Sometimes they’re holding physical clutter, stagnant energy or simply no longer functioning for the way we live now. Giving these areas a little TLC as restoring flow, often creates a noticeable shift in how the whole home feels. These area’s will also correlate the 9 energetic areas that every home has. Pay attention to where these “forgotten areas” land, and look to see if a pattern emerges. You can find out how to map your home for these areas by downloading a copy of my free 9 Area’s Guide here.
